27 earthquakes hit Vietnam in February, cause no serious property damage

VOV.VN - A total of 27 earthquakes occurred across Vietnam in February 2025, and caused no serious property damage at all, according to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center under the Vietnamese Institute of Geophysics.

The earthquake measuring between 2.5 to 3.7 on the Richter scale were mostly recorded in the earthquake-prone area of Kon Tum province, the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center said on March 3.

Of the total, 19 occurred in Kon Plong district of Kon Tum province; 7 in Nam Tra My district of Quang Nam province; and one in Chuong My district of Hanoi.

In January, 32 earthquakes were documented in Kon Plong and Nam Tra My districts, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.2. Of them, 27 occurred in Kon Plong and 5 in Nam Tra My.

Nam Tra My district, which borders Kon Plong, is a current earthquake hotspot in the Central Highlands, said the Institute of Geophysics.

According to the institute, the earthquakes in these areas are induced seismic events, triggered by the water accumulation in the local hydroelectric reservoirs, which affect the underlying fault systems. Several factors related to induced earthquakes, such as the water level, filling speed, and total amount of water in the reservoirs, can influence seismic activity. However, these effects may manifest after months or years as the water penetrates deeper.

It is projected that earthquakes will continue to occur in Kon Plong and Nam Tra My that potentially impact densely populated areas and key infrastructure facilities, particularly near the epicenter. Local authorities are advised to regularly update information and design seismic-resistant structures for various buildings.
