Hanoi Old Quarter to host “Tết Việt – Tết Phố” programme for Lunar New Year 2026

VOV.VN - The “Tết Việt – Tết Phố” (Vietnamese Tet in the Old Quarter) programme will return with an expanded scale and a wide range of cultural activities around Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi’s Old Quarter, serving residents and visitors during the Lunar New Year of Spring Binh Ngo (Year of the Horse) 2026.

The programme is organised by the Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Quarter Management Board under the direction of the Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee, marking the first year the locality operates under the two-tier local government model. The event highlights the proactive role of grassroots administrations in preserving and promoting heritage values while linking heritage with community life and the urban environment.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Hanoi Centre for Cultural and Arts, 22 Hang Buom street, Hoan Kiem ward. The programme will run until the 25th day of the Lunar New Year.

Designed as a series of coordinated cultural activities, Tết Việt – Tết Phố 2026 will take place across multiple heritage spaces in the Old Quarter and the Hoan Kiem Lake area. Visitors will have opportunities not only to observe but also to take part in traditional Tet practices, from rituals and customs to everyday family activities associated with old Hanoi.

Traditional Tet scenes of the Red River Delta will be presented through activities such as making Bánh Chưng (square sticky rice cake), preparing Tet food trays, decorating homes, Áo Dài (traditional long dress) performances, folk music, and the introduction of handicrafts and traditional craft village products, alongside art exhibitions and exchanges with artisans and researchers.

A key highlight this year is the closer linkage between historical sites in the Old Quarter and Tet-themed spaces. For the first time, the site at 22 Hang Buom Street will host a recreated Tet and spring market of the Red River Delta. Meanwhile, the restored heritage house at 87 Ma May Street will reopen to visitors, offering a glimpse into how a traditional Hanoi family prepares for Tet.

Traditional processions and the raising of the cay neu (New Year bamboo pole) will remain central activities of the programme. The procession will start from O Quan Chuong Gate (Ô Quan Chưởng), forming a symbolic route through the Old Quarter streets and the Hoan Kiem Lake pedestrian area. A ceremonial cay neu raising at Kim Ngan Communal House will serve as the spiritual highlight of the event.

Through Tết Việt – Tết Phố 2026, the Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Quarter Management Board continues its role in preserving and promoting both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, while contributing to heritage education for younger generations and linking conservation with tourism and creative economy development.
