VOV.VN - Thousands of spectators stayed at Nguyen Hue Walking Street in Ho Chi Minh City on June 13 despite heavy rain to watch the “Peaceful Homeland” gala, an outdoor cultural event that blended music, theater and historical storytelling.
Under umbrellas and persistent downpours, audiences stayed until the final performance, creating a memorable scene in the heart of Vietnam's largest city.
Organised by the Ministry of Public Security in cooperation with the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the gala served as the highlight of a three-day event series held from June 11 to 13. The programme commemorated the 78th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's Call for Patriotic Emulation, the 50th anniversary of the renaming of Saigon-Gia Dinh as Ho Chi Minh City, and the 80th anniversary of the People's Public Security Force.
Running for approximately 90 minutes, the programme presented a dramatic portrayal of the development and contributions of Vietnam's security forces throughout different historical periods.
Rather than following a conventional chronological narrative, the production combined stage performances, music, documentary footage and modern visual technology to guide audiences through key moments in the country's history.
The show revisited stories of covert operations in wartime Saigon, major security missions during periods of conflict and contemporary efforts to safeguard national security in the digital age.
One of the evening's highlights was a dramatised performance titled “A Life-or-Death Decision,” depicting security operations that prevented a bombing plot linked to anti-government groups in the early 1990s. Another production, “Tay Ninh – The Brain in the Forest,” recounted the journey of more than 11,000 security personnel who traveled through the Truong Son Mountain Range to support southern battlefields during the war.
Music played a central role throughout the gala, connecting past and present through performances by prominent Vietnamese artists, including People's Artist Ta Minh Tam, Hong Nhung, Phuong Vy and Quoc Thien.
Beyond the performances, the event also featured interactions with historical witnesses, including a tribute to Hero of the People's Armed Forces Vo Van Em, helping younger generations learn more about the country's history and those who contributed to it.
As rain continued to fall over the city, many spectators chose to remain until the closing moments of the programme. For many in attendance, the attraction extended beyond entertainment, offering an opportunity to reflect on stories of courage, sacrifice and public service told through the language of contemporary performing arts.
The gala concluded with prolonged applause from the audience, serving not only as a tribute to history but also as a reminder of the value of peace and the individuals whose efforts have helped preserve it across generations.
The “In Gratitude” concert took place at Ho Guom Opera House in Hanoi on May 22, featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Kevin Kenner, winner of the 12th International Chopin Piano Competition, alongside Vietnamese pianist Nguyen Viet Trung and the Quintet ensemble.
