VOV.VN -The non-profit art platform Hanoi Grapevine on July 17 officially launched the "Vietnam - Japan Lacquer Road Project" to promote research and creative exchange between lacquer artists and artisans from both countries.
Partnering with TAKI Corporation, the long-term partnership connects Vietnamese lacquer art with Wajima-nuri, one of Japan's oldest and most iconic lacquer traditions.
While the two nations possess distinct centuries-old traditions, they face shared modern challenges, including disruptions in knowledge transmission and changing consumer markets.
The project aims to move beyond a parallel showcase of heritage by creating a platform for dialogue. The project promotes these traditional crafts to the public while fostering new creative possibilities for the next generation, and will be implemented in two phases this year.
The first phase, scheduled for September 2026, will send three Vietnamese creators to Wajima city in Japan's Ishikawa prefecture for field research and cultural exchange: lacquer artist and researcher Truong Hoang Hai; sculptor and lacquer artist Dinh Cong Dat; and visual artist Tran Thao Miên, Founder of Collective Sonson.
The delegation will work directly with local Wajima lacquer workshops and artisans to exchange technical skills.
The second phase set to take place in Hanoi in November 2026 as part of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2026, will display joint creations and new products developed during the research exchange, alongside authentic Wajima lacquerware items presented to the public.
VOV.VN - The World Records Union presented its Guinness World Record certificate to Vietnamese artist Chu Nhat Quang, recognising his artwork as the largest lacquer painting in the world, at a ceremony in Hanoi on October 11.
