Vietnam's cinema and national image highlighted at Tokyo International Film Festival 2025

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese film delegation led by Ngo Phuong Lan, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association (VFDA), and former Director of the Vietnam Cinema Department, attended the opening of the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) on October 27 in Tokyo and launched activities to showcase Vietnam’s people, culture, and cinematic potential internationally.

The delegation included representatives from Da Nang city, Quang Ninh, Son La, Dien Bien provinces, and other individuals dedicated to Vietnamese cinema.

At the opening, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan noted that the delegation would hold meetings with key partners, Japanese film organizations, and the American Film Association during their visit.

She emphasized that participating in prestigious festivals such as Tokyo and Busan offers Vietnamese filmmakers the opportunity to learn from international experience in developing the film industry. VFDA continues to serve as a bridge connecting filmmakers, international organizations, and local authorities, with a view to attracting productions, improving the filming environment, and building a friendly, dynamic, and culturally rich Vietnamese film brand.

Vietnam’s activities at TIFF also aim to link cinema with tourism and the creative economy, demonstrating the strategic vision of VFDA and localities in promoting Vietnam globally through film, while attracting international film projects to the country, especially as the industry emerges as a new driver of cultural growth.

At this year’s festival, the film Địa đạo: Mặt trời trong bóng tối (Tunnels: Sun in the Dark) directed by Bui Thac Chuyen was selected for the World Focus category, marking its international premiere. Director Bui Thac Chuyen, along with actors Ho Thu Anh and Diem Hang Lamoon, appeared on the red carpet at the opening ceremony.

The VFDA delegation will also host a booth at the Tokyo International Film Festival Content Market (TIFFCOM), featuring a seminar on Vietnamese cinema and the “Vietnam Night” event, giving international filmmakers insights into the country’s film industry. The delegation will also introduce the 4th Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF), scheduled in Da Nang from June 28 to July 4, 2026.

Established in 1985, TIFF has grown into one of Asia’s largest film festivals, alongside Busan and Shanghai, originally held biennially until 1991 and annually thereafter.
