VOV.VN - Australia has secured a significant agreement with Vietnam that will allow fresh Australian blueberries to be exported to the Vietnamese market for the first time, unlocking an estimated AUD22 million in trade over five years.
Effective from October 10, the agreement marks a major milestone for Australia’s AUD500 million blueberry industry. In return, it will also facilitate access for Vietnamese pomelos to Australian consumers, further strengthening agricultural trade ties between the two countries.
Access to Vietnam, a market of more than 100 million consumers, is expected to substantially boost Australia’s blueberry exports, with trade value forecast to reach AUD4 million in the first year alone.
“Australia’s hardworking, innovative blueberry producers should be proud of the fruit they grow, which is sought after all around the world. This agreement is a result of both the quality of our produce, and the strength of our relationship with Vietnam,” said Julie Collins, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
“Since coming to government, we have created a wave of new opportunities for our farmers and producers. We will keep working tirelessly to expand opportunities for our farmers and producers to export our world-class products on the international stage.”
According to the Australian Ambassy in Hanoi, the bilateral arrangement stems from negotiations that began in 2022 and reflects the strong and growing relationship between Australia and Vietnam.
In the 2024–2025 period, the Australian Government has recorded 79 technical market access achievements across various agricultural products, including maintaining and restoring access to existing markets, opening new ones, and enhancing current access, collectively supporting up to AUD4 billion in trade.
These efforts are part of the Government’s broader strategy to elevate the global competitiveness of Australian agriculture, contributing to its goal of reaching over AUD100 billion in value for the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors by 2025–2026.
