VOV.VN - Experts say biofuels can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support sustainable development, enhance energy self-sufficiency and contribute to national energy security.
The remarks were made at the 2026 Biofuel Development Forum held in Hanoi on June 17 by the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) Online Newspaper in coordination with the Agency for Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The forum was attended by representatives of VOV, Brazilian Ambassador to Vietnam Marco Farani, officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Science and Technology, industry associations, and experts in energy, the environment and the circular economy.
In his address at the event, Pham Manh Hung, VOV Deputy General Director highlighted biofuel development as an important part of the energy transition and supports Vietnam's international commitments on climate action as well as its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Biofuels not only contribute to energy security and environmental protection but also create opportunities for new industries, increase the value of agricultural production and promote technological innovation, Hung went on.
According to Hung, all petrol stations nationwide began selling E10 biofuel on June 1, 2026, under a roadmap issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The nationwide rollout of E10 is expected to help reduce emissions in the transport sector, improve energy efficiency and support green economic value chains.
However, he noted that the sustainable growth of the biofuel market will require continued coordination among relevant agencies to ensure stable supply, improve product quality, refine policy mechanisms and raise public awareness.
Meanwhile, Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Agency for Innovation, Green Transition and Industry Promotion under the Ministry of Industry and Trade said renewable energy and biofuels are becoming increasingly important not only for environmental protection but also for energy security amid increasingly complex climate challenges, declining fossil fuel resources and the risk of supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions and conflicts.
According to Anh, developing renewable energy sources based on each country's resources and natural conditions can strengthen energy self-reliance and provide a foundation for sustainable socio-economic development. He stressed that biofuels are renewable fuels that meet the requirements for cleaner and greener development while helping enhance national energy security.
The forum serves as a platform for policymakers, businesses, experts and scientists to exchange views, assess the initial results of the nationwide use of E10 biofuel and propose measures to support the development of a modern, efficient and sustainable biofuel market.
At the event, Brazilian Ambassador to Vietnam Marco Farani shared Brazil's experience in developing bioethanol, describing it as a strategic tool for reducing transport emissions while strengthening energy security, supporting industrial development and generating income in rural areas.
He said Brazil's bioethanol industry had been built over decades through consistent policies and close coordination among farmers, fuel producers, distributors, automakers and government agencies. According to the ambassador, bioethanol has become an integral part of the country's transport system and demonstrates the importance of long-term policy stability in building a viable low-carbon fuel market.
Farani noted that bioethanol needs to be viewed as a complement to transport electrification rather than a competing solution, particularly as vehicles powered by internal combustion engines continue to make up a large share of the global fleet. He added that the development of biofuels should be accompanied by strong sustainability standards, transparent emissions management and domestic value creation. Vietnam, he said, can draw on Brazil's experience while designing a biofuels strategy suited to its own resources and development priorities.
As Vietnam has introduced E10 biofuel nationwide, marking a new milestone in its clean energy development strategy, experts and vehicle manufacturers say concerns over engine durability, fuel consumption and vehicle compatibility have largely been addressed through scientific research and international experience.
