FDI firms drive Vietnam’s shift towards higher-value coffee exports

VOV.VN - Vietnam exported 1.45 million tonnes of coffee in the first nine months of 2026, earning US$6.6 billion in revenue, with foreign invested enterprises accounting for two fifths of the total.

Export volume rose 16.2% year on year, while export value fell 6.9%, according to the latest statistics.

The figures follow a record year for Vietnam’s coffee industry in 2025, when export revenue reached approximately US$8.9 billion, up 58.8% from 2024, largely on the back of favourable prices. The contrasting trends in volume and value this year highlight the importance of improving product value and moving further into processing.

Foreign-invested firms strengthen their role in coffee exports

Foreign-invested enterprises contributed US$2.7 billion to coffee export revenue in the reviewed period, making up more than 40% of the total.

According to the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association (Vicofa), domestic businesses have traditionally focused on green coffee beans, while foreign-invested firms have established a strong presence in deeper processing, including instant coffee, roasted and ground coffee, and blended products. Their access to capital, advanced technology, large-scale production facilities and international distribution networks has helped them expand processing capacity and reach overseas markets.

Leading companies represent nearly 80% of export value in the processed coffee segment. Major players include Nestlé Vietnam, Outspan Vietnam, Iguacu Vietnam, Sucafina Vietnam, URC Vietnam and Sucden Coffee Vietnam.

In recent years, multinational corporations have invested hundreds of millions of US dollars in modern coffee processing facilities in Vietnam, boosting production capacity and strengthening the country’s integration into global supply chains.

In August, Nestlé Vietnam commissioned a new glass-jar packaging line at its Tri An factory. The line has an initial capacity of more than 350,000 jars a day, with products destined for 11 markets. The investment is expected to expand Vietnam’s capacity to process and package instant coffee for export.

Deeper processing offers a route to higher value

Investment in technology and deeper processing is emerging as an important strategy for increasing value added in Vietnam’s coffee industry. Rather than relying primarily on green coffee bean exports, businesses are increasingly focusing on finished products such as instant coffee, roasted and ground coffee, and other higher-value offerings.

Vietnam’s processed coffee exports brought back approximately US$1.78 billion in 2025, up 50.4% from the previous year. The growth reflected businesses’ efforts to expand production capacity, upgrade technology and diversify their product portfolios.

Expanding processed coffee exports could help diversify Vietnam’s export structure and reduce reliance on unprocessed beans. By moving further up the value chain, the industry can capture more value from its output, access new markets and strengthen its competitiveness in global coffee trade.
