NA Vice Chairman urges stronger GWEC support for Vietnam's energy transition

VOV.VN - Vice Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Hong Dien on June 9 met with a delegation from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), led by Chief Executive Officer Ben Backwell, to discuss renewable energy development and energy transition in Vietnam.

Nguyen Hong Dien spoke highly of GWEC’s contributions to advancing renewable energy worldwide, its policy recommendations and its cooperation with Vietnamese agencies and partners in recent years.

He said Vietnam is entering a new stage of development, with strong resolve to pursue institutional reform and advance economic growth through science and technology, innovation and digital transformation, alongside green and energy transitions and its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

In that process, Vietnam views renewable energy not only as a means of diversifying energy sources and ensuring national energy security, but also as a driver of economic growth, technological innovation and greater economic competitiveness.

Over the years, the Party and State of Vietnam have introduced a range of policies to encourage clean and renewable energy and promote the green energy transition, contributing to national energy security, the fulfilment of international commitments on greenhouse gas emissions reduction, green growth and the creation of new development opportunities for the economy, Dien told his guest.

Against a rapidly changing and increasingly complex global environment, the NA Vice Chairman said Vietnam is continuing to review and improve its institutions, policies and legal framework to ensure consistency, practicality and a transparent, stable and favourable investment environment for both domestic and foreign investors.

Dien expressed the hope that GWEC will continue serving as a bridge between the international business community and Vietnam in the process of developing and refining institutions and policies.

He also encouraged the council to give policy recommendations, share international experience, support appropriate resources for energy transition and market growth, and promote investment cooperation opportunities in wind power and renewable energy in Vietnam.

The NA Vice Chairman further encouraged GWEC member companies to focus not only on individual projects but also on technology transfer, workforce training, supply chain development and the establishment of a renewable energy industrial ecosystem in Vietnam.

For his part, Ben Backwell hailed Vietnam’s commitment to green transition, energy transition, renewable energy development and its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Both sides also discussed solutions to develop onshore and offshore wind power and support businesses through skills development and workforce training to facilitate renewable energy development and effective wind power projects in Vietnam.
