Seminar seeks solutions to green transition in garment making

VOV.VN - Vietnamese textile and garment firms are required to exert greater efforts in transforming into a green production model in a bid to maintain their export markets and join the global supply chain, heard a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City on July 27.

The view was shared by experts at a seminar held within the framework the international expo of fabrics, garment accessories and machinery for the garment and textile industry (SaigonTex & SaigonFabric 2023) that is taking place in Ho Chi Minh City from July 26 to July 29.

Addressing the event, Huynh Minh Vu, deputy director of the HCM City Centre of International Integration Support (CIIS), noted that in order to help businesses transform production models towards sustainable development, the southern city’s relevant units have introduced many schemes relating to digital transformation, the circular economy, and sustainable development over recent years.

Vu pointed out that several new-generation free trade agreements (FTAs) that the country has signed have also integrated commitments on environment and sustainable development.

Most notably, the country’s major export markets such as the United States, the EU, Japan, and the Republic of Korea have also issued strict regulations on environmental protection and sustainable development for imported goods, forcing foreign suppliers to meet requirements of emissions reduction and green production, he added.

For her part, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang suggested that Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises move to accelerate in-depth development and actively get involved in the global supply chain at stages such as design, production of input materials, and the development of distribution systems moving forward.

With the nation’s textile and garment industry witnessing an average export growth rate of between 8% and 15% annually, the industry aims to rake in between US$68 billion and US$70 billion from exports by 2030.
