VOV.VN - Vietnam-Japan trade turnover exceeded US$51.43 billion in 2025, up 11.28% year on year, marking the first time bilateral turnover has crossed the US$50 billion mark and showing substantive, sustainable growth despite continued turbulence in the global economy.
Vietnam maintained a US$2.09 billion trade surplus, while reinforcing Japan’s position as one of the most stable and important markets for Vietnamese goods.
According to Vietnamese Trade Counsellor in Japan Ta Duc Minh, Vietnam’s exports to Japan reached US$26.77 billion, an increase of 8.77%, while imports totaled US$24.68 billion, up 14.13%. The expansion stemmed from parallel gains in both flows, showing the complementary nature of the two economies and their supply chains.
On the export side, several key product groups kept up positive momentum, particularly higher value-added goods and agro-forestry- fishery products. Garments generated US$4.595 billion, transport equipment and parts US$3.287 billion, and timber and wood products US$2.153 billion, up 23.33%.
A number of agricultural products posted solid increases, with coffee up 46.57%, cashew nuts 34.72% and pepper 25.90%, indicating Vietnamese enterprises’ growing ability to meet Japan’s stringent market standards.
On the import side, Vietnam continued to step up purchases of computers, electronic products and components (US$8.347 billion), as well as machinery, equipment and parts (US$4.886 billion). These two categories made up nearly 54% of total imports from Japan, highlighting the country’s role as a key source of technology, equipment and production inputs for Vietnam’s manufacturing and export activities.
The outcome is closely linked to the strategic direction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade in carrying out free trade agreements such as the Vietnam–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), while supporting enterprises in taking advantage of tariff preferences and developing core export industries. On that basis, the Vietnam Trade Office in Japan has acted as a direct and practical bridge between business communities in the two countries through trade and investment promotion and market-linking work.
Looking ahead to 2026, amid emerging challenges, the trade office will intensify monitoring and analysis of market developments to provide timely policy input and early warnings for businesses; further expand trade promotion and diversify export products for the Japanese market; and help companies enhance competitiveness, navigate technical standards, build brands and broaden distribution channels.
At the same time, priority will be placed on attracting high-quality investment from Japan, improving the investment climate, streamlining administrative procedures and strengthening a transparent and predictable legal framework; advancing supporting industries, workforce development, technology transfer and R&D cooperation.
Bilateral cooperation will also be boosted in areas such as digital transformation, the green economy, clean energy and logistics, in line with both countries’ sustainable development orientations.
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s FPT Corporation on December 30 announced the delivery of its first shipment of commercial semiconductor chips to a leading Japanese electronics company via Restar, one of Japan’s top electronics distributors.
Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) are among Vietnam’s most important economic partners, with considerable room for further cooperation, but Vietnamese enterprises must adopt clearer strategies and continuously upgrade technological capacity to attract more investment and expand trade, experts said.
