Vietnam-Laos Trade Fair strengthens economic cooperation and strategic cohesion

VOV.VN - The Vietnam-Laos Trade Fair 2026 (VIETLAO EXPO 2026) opened at the Lao-ITECC Trade Centre in Vientiane on July 16 with the aim of strengthening economic, trade and investment cooperation and advancing strategic cohesion between the two countries.

The annual event is jointly organized by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Foreign Trade Department under Laos' Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

The annual fair provides a platform for trade organizations, manufacturers and investors from Vietnam and Laos to meet, exchange experience, transfer technology, explore investment opportunities and form joint ventures.

The opening ceremony was attended by Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Minh Tam; Lao Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Phouthavanh Nanthavong; heads of departments and agencies under the two ministries; and representatives of ministries, local authorities, business associations and enterprises from both nations.

At the event, Lao Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Phouthavanh Nanthavong said  the two Parties and the two States had continued to boost comprehensive cooperation and mutual support over the years in safeguarding and developing their countries.

Economic and trade cooperation has deepened steadily and achieved notable results. He highlighted the fair as a meaningful initiative that supports cooperation in trade, investment and tourism while further enhancing  the two countries' great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion.

According to Ambassador Nguyen Minh Tam, the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion between Vietnam and Laos, nurtured by generations of leaders and people of both countries, remains an invaluable shared asset. Economic, trade and investment cooperation has increasingly become one of the key pillars providing a solid foundation for translating strategic cohesion into concrete cooperation between the two countries. The fair displayed  quality products from Vietnam and Laos while creating new opportunities for business cooperation.

Amid growing regional and global uncertainties, Nguyen Minh Tam stressed that it is strategically important for the two countries to boost  economic connectivity by making full use of their geographical advantages, border infrastructure, and bilateral and multilateral trade agreements. He expressed confidence that bilateral trade could reach US$4 billion in 2026 and US$10 billion by 2030 through the joint efforts of both sides.

According to the organizers, Vietnam-Laos economic cooperation has continued to post encouraging results. Vietnam currently has 289 investment projects in Laos with total registered capital of US$6.7 billion. In the first half of this year alone, Vietnamese investment in Laos hit close to US$600 million, more than 4.2 times higher than a year earlier, with projects concentrated in hydropower, mining, high-tech agriculture and telecommunications, including Unitel. Many of these projects have operated effectively, contributing to Laos' state budget and social welfare.

The fair features 250 standard booths with the participation of more than 90 businesses. Vietnam's exhibition area comprises 120 booths representing nearly 80 companies, while the Lao side has more than 70 booths from 50 companies.

Besides traditional products such as agricultural, forestry and fishery products, textiles and garments, wooden products and consumer goods, the fair has expanded its exhibition space for higher value-added industries, including electrical and electronic products, industrial machinery, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. It also features leading Vietnamese brands and OCOP (One Commune One Product) specialties from localities across Vietnam.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, three cooperation agreements were signed between Vietnamese and Lao businesses, helping step up business-to-business cooperation and strategic cohesion as agreed by the two countries' senior leaders.
