Vietnam passion fruit, pomelo gain wider export opportunities

VOV.VN - Vietnam is stepping up negotiations to open the US market to passion fruit and the Japanese market to pomelo, while completing export requirements for China and Australia, creating new opportunities for the two fruits to enter high-demand markets with stringent standards.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) is accelerating negotiations to expand overseas markets for passion fruit and pomelo, aiming to boost export value and support sustainable growth.

For passion fruit, the US market is expected to offer an important new export destination. According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the US is expected to publish a notice in 2026 allowing imports of Vietnamese passion fruit. If implemented, the move would give the fruit access to a market with stringent requirements on quality, food safety and phytosanitary controls.

The Central Highlands account for more than 80% of Vietnam’s passion fruit cultivation area and over 90% of national output. Under the national plan for developing key fruit crops for 2025-2030, Vietnam aims to maintain passion fruit cultivation at 12,000-15,000 hectares, with annual output of 250,000-300,000 tonnes.

Vietnamese pomelo is also making progress in several markets. In Japan, Japanese experts have traveled to Vietnam to supervise large-scale trials involving fruit flies affecting pomelo crops. The results will provide a basis for developing pest management measures and completing technical requirements, paving the way for market access.

In China, the two sides signed a protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Vietnamese pomelo and fresh coconut exports in April 2026. Vietnam is now completing dossiers on registered growing areas and packing facilities in line with requirements set by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).

Specifically, Vietnam has submitted images and videos of 140 registered growing area and packing facility codes as requested by GACC, while also seeking approval for 221 growing area codes and 63 packing facilities.

Australia is another market where Vietnamese pomelo has already gained official access. Australia approved imports of Vietnamese pomelo, with the first shipment exported in April 2026.

These developments show that opportunities to expand markets for passion fruit and pomelo are increasing, but they also come with increasingly stringent requirements on quality and supply chain controls.

Vietnam currently has around 106,000 hectares under pomelo cultivation. As export markets expand, the management of growing area codes, packing facilities, pest control and traceability will become increasingly important to maintaining market access and securing additional orders.

The same requirements apply to passion fruit as it enters high-standard markets. Market access therefore not only creates additional outlets for Vietnamese produce but also encourages farmers and businesses to improve quality and strengthen controls from cultivation through packing and export.

In the first seven months of 2026, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports reached around US$4.83 billion, up 24.9% year on year. The strong growth provides a foundation for products such as passion fruit and pomelo to expand into new markets, increase value and strengthen the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products.
