Khmer people in southern region joyfully mark Chol Chnam Thmay festival
VOV.VN - Khmer ethnic people residing in the southern region are currently enjoying a festive atmosphere as they celebrate the traditional New Year festival Chol Chnam Thmay.
The 2023 Chol Chnam Thmay festival takes place from April 14 to April 16, or the 24th to 26th of the second lunar month.
The event is their biggest festival of the year, marks the end of the dry season, the beginning of a new year and new crops.
Most activities during the course of the three-day Chol Chnam Thmay festival occur at the pagoda.
On the first day, people head to the pagoda in order to burn incense and to worship their ancestors. They then take part in charity work for disadvantaged people. On the third day they use scented water in order to bath the Buddha and young people spray scented water on older people to wish them both longevity and happiness.
Preparing for the biggest festival of the ethnic Khmer people at local pagodas

Art performances take place in boarding schools in Soc Trang province to mark the start of the Chol Chnam Thmay festival.
As many as 300 teachers and students joyfully celebrate the biggest festival of the Khmer people.
Sports activities also get underway.
The festival provides a chance for ethnic people to meet and share their own experiences in production ahead of the arrival of new crops.
Leaders present gifts to monks as part of the occasion.
