VOV.VN - The first working day of the 9th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Union for the 2026-2031 term began on the morning of June 7 at the National Convention Centre in Hanoi.
The congress is an important political event for Vietnam’s farmers and the Vietnam Farmers' Union, bringing together nearly 600 official delegates representing more than 10 million union members and farmers nationwide.
Earlier in the morning, the delegation paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum and laid wreaths in memory of fallen heroes and martyrs.
During the morning plenary session, delegates carried out a number of key agenda items, including the election of the Presidium, the Secretariat and the Delegate Eligibility Verification Committee; the adoption of the congress agenda and working regulations; hearing the report on delegate eligibility; consideration of a draft review report of the 8th Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union; and discussion of a proposal to amend and supplement the union’s charter.
Delegates also met in four discussion groups to provide comments on draft congress documents, proposed amendments and supplements to the charter of the Vietnam Farmers' Union, and the review report of the 8th Central Committee.
Drawing on practical experience in Dong Thap province, Huynh Cong Minh, member of the Standing Committee and head of the socio-economic section of the provincial Farmers' Union, said one notable feature of the draft documents is the orientation towards building a new Vietnamese farmer linked to digital transformation and the development of the collective economy.
In addition to expressing broad support for the overall direction, delegates discussed a number of practical issues at the grassroots level, including developing a model of “professional farmers”, incorporating digital transformation into union activities, expanding membership, developing the Farmers' Support Fund, supporting farmers’ participation in the collective economy and promoting the transformation of production and business models.
Nguyen Hong Hung, Vice Chairman of the Hai Phong Farmers' Union, stressed the need to further promote digital transformation in union activities, including the “Digital Literacy for All” movement and the rollout of the Farmers' App to members.
According to the programme, the congress will continue its work in the afternoon with reports summarising, receiving and explaining comments on the amended and supplemented charter of the Vietnam Farmers' Union; discussion and voting on the revised charter; adoption of election regulations; election of the 9th Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union; announcement of election results; and the first meeting of the newly elected 9th Central Committee.
The Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union (VFU) re-elected Thao Xuan Sung as Chairman of the union for the 2018-2023 tenure at its first meeting on December 12.
