International media in US briefed on Vietnam National Party Congress

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese diplomat on January 14 briefed international media in New York on preparations for the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, an event expected to set the country’s development direction for the coming decades.

The briefing was chaired by Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and attended by representatives from more than 20 major international news agencies, including Reuters, CNBC, Le Monde, Al Jazeera, NHK, Nikkei, Kyodo News, Asahi Shimbun, Xinhua, CCTV, RIA Novosti, TASS and SABC News. Representatives from the News and Media Division of the United Nations Secretariat were also on hand.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Viet noted the 14th Party Congress holds special significance as it reviews 40 years of Đổi mới (Renewal), assesses the implementation of resolutions adopted at the 13th Congress, and hammers out Vietnam’s development goals and strategic orientation for the next phase.

He highlighted several key priorities outlined in the draft congress documents, with a primary focus on improving institutional frameworks, developing high-quality human resources, and accelerating infrastructure development.

The congress is also expected to establish a new growth model driven primarily by science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, while identifying the private sector as one of the most important drivers of the national economy.

Environmental protection, alongside socio-economic development, will also be defined as a central task.

On foreign policy, Ambassador Viet said the 14th Congress will, for the first time, identify diplomacy and international integration alongside national defence and security as core and regular tasks. Vietnam will continue to pursue an independent, self-reliant, peaceful and cooperative foreign policy, based on multilateralism, diversification of external relations, equality and mutual benefit.

He reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to being a reliable partner and a proactive, responsible member of the international community, while safeguarding national interests in line with international law and the United Nations Charter.

The diplomat also shared updates on Vietnam’s socio-economic development and foreign relations achievements in 2025.

Responding to questions on Vietnam’s priorities at the United Nations in 2026, he said the country will continue to strongly support multilateralism and the UN’s central role in global governance, including efforts to successfully chair the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) scheduled for April–May 2026.
