PM urges Belgium to ratify EVIPA, support removal of IUU “yellow card”

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính called on Belgium to soon ratify the EU–Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and support the European Commission’s removal of the IUU “yellow card” on Vietnamese seafood, during a reception in Hanoi for Belgian Ambassador to Vietnam Karl Van Den Bossche.

Receiving the Belgian diplomat on February 26, the Prime Minister also encouraged Belgian enterprises to expand investment in Vietnam, particularly in areas of Belgium’s strengths such as seaport infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy and high-tech agriculture. He suggested that Belgium continue providing non-refundable ODA for projects in education and training, vocational training, health care, environment and post-war recovery.

PM Chinh expressed appreciation to the Belgian House of Representatives for adopting a Resolution in October 2023 supporting Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange, highlighting Belgium as the only country to have passed a standalone resolution on this issue. He welcomed Belgium’s continued engagement in environmental remediation projects and socio-economic development initiatives in affected localities.

The leader reaffirmed that Vietnam considers Belgium an important partner within the European Union and called for enhanced political trust through high-level exchanges and effective coordination at bilateral mechanisms and multilateral forums.

Both sides agreed to maintain cooperation in traditional areas such as defence-security, culture, education and training, tourism and climate change response, while expanding collaboration into strategic sectors including science and technology, semiconductor industry and transport infrastructure.

For his part, Ambassador Karl Van Den Bossche reiterated that Belgium regards Vietnam as a priority partner in the region and stands ready to accompany the country in achieving its socio-economic development goals, including post-war recovery efforts. He reaffirmed Belgium’s commitment to supporting environmental clean-up and victims of Agent Orange.

The Ambassador also commended Vietnam’s recent development achievements and expressed confidence that the recent elevation of Vietnam–EU ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership would create further momentum for deeper and more effective cooperation between Vietnam and EU member states, including Belgium.

On this occasion, the Belgian Ambassador thanked the Prime Minister and relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies for their close coordination in advancing bilateral cooperation projects.
