VOV.VN - An Australian expert says Party General Secretary and State President To Lam's upcoming state visit to Australia is more than a symbolic occasion, with the trip expected to build on growing strategic trust and translate the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into more concrete cooperation.
In an interview granted to a Canberra-based VOV correspondent, Layton Pike, an Advisory Board member of the Australia Vietnam Policy Institute (AVPI), noted that the August 9-12 visit at the invitation of Governor-General Sam Mostyn reflects growing trust between the two countries and the commitment of their leaders to making the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership more substantive and effective.
The expert said the agenda is likely to focus on areas where the two economies have strong complementarities, including trade, investment, education, innovation, the green transition and people-to-people exchanges. The visit also sends a positive signal to businesses, academics and investors in both countries about their commitment to long-term cooperation.
Since Vietnam and Australia upgraded their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024, bilateral cooperation has expanded across a wide range of areas, Pike affirmed.
Economic ties have continued to grow, while cooperation in education and workforce development has expanded. Innovation, the green transition and emerging technologies are also becoming new drivers of bilateral cooperation.
However, the expert said the most important foundation of Vietnam-Australia relations is the strong connections between their people.
Links built through businesses, students, alumni, researchers and the Vietnamese community in Australia have created valuable social capital, helping sustain bilateral ties across generations.
Pike said this foundation of trust would help the two countries translate their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into practical cooperation that supports growth and prosperity in both economies.
Pike described Vietnam as one of Australia's important partners in Southeast Asia and said strengthening trade, investment and supply-chain links would become increasingly important as the regional and global economic environment continues to change.
Vietnam's development goals through 2045 to become a developed economy are also creating new opportunities for bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas where the two countries have complementary strengths, including education, workforce development, scientific research, innovation and trade.
In his view, stronger cooperation in research, technological innovation and skills development could help both countries enhance their competitiveness as the region undergoes rapid economic and technological transformation.
