UN leader Antonio Guterres warmly welcomed in Hanoi on official visit

VOV.VN - President of Vietnam Luong Cuong hosted a welcoming ceremony for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Hanoi on October 24, marking his official visit to Vietnam.

The UN leader’s visit coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (October 24, 1945–2025) and the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2, 1945–2025). These milestones hold deep symbolic significance, reflecting the parallel paths of development shared by both parties and their commitment to enduring core values and principles that continue to shape the future.

Over the past 80 years, despite numerous global challenges and calls for reform, the UN has remained an irreplaceable multilateral organisation and a central mechanism in global governance. Most member states recognise the UN’s vital role and seek to strengthen their contributions to safeguard national interests and enhance their international standing.

Since joining the UN in 1977, Vietnam’s relations with the organisation have grown steadily and deepened over time. The UN has accompanied Vietnam through post-war reconstruction, recovery from embargoes, and gradual international integration. Vietnam has increasingly demonstrated proactive and meaningful engagement, contributing ideas, personnel, and resources across key UN areas, including peacekeeping, security, and development cooperation.

Vietnam consistently prioritises cooperation with the UN as a core component of its foreign policy. The country has taken an active and responsible role as a member, making substantive contributions across the UN’s main pillars - peace and security, development cooperation, and human rights promotion.

During his tenure, Secretary-General Guterres has introduced initiatives and measures to address global challenges while enhancing UN effectiveness. Known for his special regard for Vietnam, he has repeatedly affirmed the country as a key UN partner across multiple fields. Vietnam is among the few countries visited by Secretary-General Guterres more than once during a single term.

Building on nearly five decades of Vietnam–UN relations, Secretary-General Guterres’ official visit and participation in the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime on October 24–25, mark a significant milestone. Vietnam’s hosting of the UN signing ceremony underscores its commitment to an independent, diversified, and multilateral foreign policy, proactive and comprehensive international integration, and consistent support for the principles of multilateralism.
