VOV.VN - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will pay an official visit to Vietnam and attend the opening for the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (the Hanoi Convention), to be held in Hanoi on October 24 - 25.
The invitation has been extended by President Luong Cuong of Vietnam, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its press communique on October 20.
According to the United Nations, the Convention, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 24, 2024, is the first comprehensive international legal instrument on combating cybercrime. It aims to strengthen cooperation among countries in investigation, extradition, mutual legal assistance, and prevention of offenses committed through information and communication technologies.
The selection of Hanoi as the venue for the opening for signing ceremony highlights Vietnam’s growing international role and recognition in promoting multilateral diplomacy and contributing to global governance, particularly in the areas of cybersecurity and digital transformation.
The event is expected to be attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, senior Vietnamese leaders, and delegations from around 100 countries and international organisations.
As of October 6, the Government had received confirmations from 100 countries and over 100 international and regional organisations to attend the Opening for the Signature of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (the Hanoi Convention), with the participation of numerous heads of state, government leaders.
Vietnam’s hosting of the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention) in Hanoi on October 25–26 demonstrates the country’s commitment to promoting the rule of law in cyberspace and its contribution to global efforts to address emerging challenges in international affairs.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son presided over a meeting of the steering board for the Opening for Signature of the UN Convention against Cybercrime and related events in Vietnam on October 13.
