VOV.VN - Vietnam and Indonesia are likely to elevate their strategic partnership to a new level during the coming state visit to the island state by Party General Secretary To Lam, according to diplomats.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam and his spouse will pay a state visit to Indonesia at the invitation of Indonesian President and Chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) Prabowo Subianto, starting on March 9.
Both countries are expecting to upgrade their bilateral relations to a new level during the Vietnamese Party leader’s visit, said Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi.
He told the press ahead of To Lam’s visit that 2025 is a special year in bilateral relations as the two countries are celebrating 70 years of their diplomatic ties. Bilateral relations have developed positively over the past decades through reciprocal visit exchanges, helping to sketch out cooperation orientations across various areas.
Notably, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Indonesia reached US$16.7 billion last year, doubling the figure recorded in 2020 and coming close to the US$18 billion target set for 2028.
Beyond trade, bilateral cooperation has also flourished in various other fields, such as education, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
The two sides have also collaborated on the construction of a mosque in An Giang province, thus fostering connections between the people of both countries. This initiative paves the way for stronger cooperation in the Halal industry, which both sides are highly interested in and see great potential for.
The two countries have completed negotiations and are working towards the early ratification of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delimitation agreement, bringing tangible benefits to their people.
With the current developments, both countries are ready to strengthen their relationship further, helping to realize their shared vision of becoming high-income economies by 2045, said Abdi.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, in an interview granted to Jakarta-based VOV correspondents, also stated that both countries have sufficient conditions to elevate their relations to a new level.
Such an upgrade not only contributes to the development and prosperity of bilateral relations but also to the growth and prosperity of the region as a whole, he said, adding the Vietnam-Indonesia relationship can serve as a model that both countries can take pride in, demonstrating their contributions and shared benefits not just for the region but on a larger scale.
Vietnam and Indonesia established diplomatic ties in 1955 and elevated their ties to a strategic partnership in 2013.
The two countries have formed a solid foundation for cooperation through the signing of multiple agreements and cooperation pacts across various fields. The Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation at the Foreign Minister level has held five meetings, while the Joint Committee on Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation has convened seven times, further deepening bilateral ties.
Vietnam and Indonesia are key trade partners within ASEAN, with rapidly growing economies and vast cooperation potential. Both countries are members of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), providing significant advantages for boosting bilateral trade.
Currently, Indonesia is Vietnam’s second largest trading partner in ASEAN, while Vietnam ranks as Indonesia’s fourth largest trading partner in the region. Bilateral trade has quadrupled over the past decade, reaching US$8.2 billion in 2020, US$11.5 billion in 2021, US$14.1 billion in 2022, US$13.7 billion in 2023, and US$16.73 billion in 2024.
As of January 2025, Indonesia’s total direct investment in Vietnam amounted to US$669.7 million across 130 projects, ranking 30th out of 149 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.
These cooperation mechanisms create favourable conditions for businesses from both countries to expand their markets, reduce tariff barriers, enhance supply chain connectivity, and seize opportunities within the region. This not only fosters robust two-way trade growth but also strengthens their roles in the regional and global economy.
On the international stage, Vietnam and Indonesia share many common interests and strategic viewpoints. The two countries closely coordinate their positions at multilateral forums, particularly within ASEAN, the United Nations, APEC, and the Non-Aligned Movement, contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region and beyond.
VOV.VN - The high-level plenary session of the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 on February 26 focused on ASEAN’s future, strategic autonomy, economic sustainability, and regional cooperation, with the participation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, and Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta.
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam and his spouse will pay a state visit to Indonesia, an official visit to the ASEAN Secretariat, and an official visit to Singapore from March 9 to 13.
The economic and investment relations between Vietnam and Indonesia have grown significantly in recent years, becoming one of the important pillars in the bilateral relationship between the two countries, according to Indonesian Deputy Minister of Investment Nurul Ichwan.
