VOV.VN - Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang has called for stronger Japanese business and academic engagement with Vietnam Japan University to develop high-quality human resources in semiconductors, digital transformation, green transition and artificial intelligence.
Receiving Takebe Tsutomu, special advisor to the Japan-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Alliance in Hanoi on October 12, Thang highlighted the potential for stronger links between Vietnam Japan University and Japanese businesses, universities and research institutes to develop skilled professionals for both countries.
He welcomed his guest’s contributions to bilateral ties, particularly in cultural exchanges, people-to-people relations, local cooperation, education and human resource development.
He also congratulated Takebe on the successful Vietnam Festival in Hokkaido in August 2026, recognising his longstanding commitment to strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang noted that the Vietnam Japan University project is making positive progress, with both sides actively working to advance its development.
He encouraged Takebe to promote greater engagement by Japanese businesses, universities and research institutes with the university, creating stronger links between skilled graduates and companies in Vietnam and Japan.
He also underlined the importance of developing high-quality training programmes in semiconductors, digital transformation, the green transition and artificial intelligence. These fields are increasingly relevant to Vietnam’s development priorities and the demand for skilled workers.
Beyond education, Thang emphasised the importance of expanding cultural and tourism cooperation, people-to-people exchanges and partnerships between localities in the two countries.
He also urged continued efforts to improve conditions for Vietnamese trainees and workers in Japan, including their working environments and quality of life, with support from the Japanese Government and local authorities.
Takebe, for his part, expressed pleasure at the progress of Vietnam Japan University, describing it as a symbol of bilateral cooperation in human resource development. He said he has devoted considerable effort to advancing the project.
As the university marks its 10th anniversary in 2026, Takebe hoped that it would enter a new phase of development amid Vietnam’s ongoing education and training reforms.
He spoke of continued support from the Vietnamese Government and proposed a three-way cooperation model involving the State, universities and businesses. Greater coordination among these stakeholders, he said, could enable the university to contribute more effectively to developing high-quality human resources for the socio-economic development of both Vietnam and Japan.
Established on July 21, 2014, under a decision by Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Vietnam Japan University (VJU) is a member university of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and a flagship cooperation project between the Vietnamese and Japanese governments.
The university grew out of a shared vision to establish an internationally oriented, research-driven institution that would develop high-quality human resources and strengthen bilateral ties. Its academic programmes span Japanese studies, computer science and engineering, civil engineering, smart agriculture and sustainability, food technology and health, and intelligent mechatronics and Japanese manufacturing.
The university also offers postgraduate training and research opportunities, with a focus on interdisciplinary education, advanced technologies and sustainable development. In 2025, it expanded its undergraduate offerings to include semiconductor chip engineering, intelligent control and automation, and global innovation and development, reflecting the growing importance of high-tech skills to Vietnam’s development.
