Vietnam explores Singapore’s innovation and smart transport models

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse visited several advanced technology research and transport infrastructure facilities in Singapore on May 30, gaining insights into models widely regarded as benchmarks for innovation and high-tech industrial development in the city-state.

During a visit to the A*STAR Model Factory, the leader expressed particular interest in Singapore’s approach to creating an environment where businesses can directly test technologies before making large-scale investment decisions.

According to the Vietnamese leader, the model reflects a highly practical development mindset in which the State shares part of the initial risks, businesses are encouraged to innovate more boldly and researchers are more closely connected to production needs and productivity improvements.

“If we only choose safety, there will be no breakthroughs,” he said, adding that Vietnam is currently refining mechanisms that allow for reasonable risk acceptance in scientific research and encourage experimentation with new technologies.

Reaffirming that science, technology, innovation and digital transformation are strategic drivers for rapid and sustainable growth, he noted Vietnam is accelerating institutional reforms, developing high-quality human resources and strengthening national technological capacity to participate more deeply in global value chains.

He also said Vietnam hopes to establish practical technology centres where businesses can access experts, test new production processes and train workers in real industrial environments. According to him, this is especially important for sectors such as supporting industries, semiconductors and high-tech manufacturing.

The Vietnamese leader described Singapore as an important partner with valuable development experience and expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, smart manufacturing, innovation and high-tech workforce training would continue expanding in the years ahead.

The A*STAR Model Factory is considered a large-scale manufacturing laboratory where businesses, research institutes and policymakers can directly test and evaluate Industry 4.0 technologies before deploying them in real production settings. The facility integrates advanced technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), autonomous robotics and smart manufacturing management systems.

Later the same day, the Vietnamese leader also visited the Singapore Rail Test Centre, where he said the model offered useful lessons for Vietnam as metro systems in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City continue expanding operations.

According to the leader, Vietnam can learn from Singapore’s approach to training engineers capable of mastering core technologies and independently carrying out inspection, maintenance and overhaul work for critical rail systems. He also highlighted the application of digital transformation technologies to optimise maintenance processes and reduce operational costs.

The Singapore Rail Test Centre is a specialised technical complex designed for testing, maintenance and evaluation of metro trains, signaling systems and new rail technologies. The facility allows Singapore to conduct continuous testing in an independent environment without affecting the commercial operation of the existing metro network.
