VOV.VN - Vietnam considers social development and social justice key pillars of its national development strategy, with improvements in people’s living standards serving as the ultimate measure of growth, a senior Vietnamese diplomat told the United Nations this week.
Addressing the 64th session of the UN Commission for Social Development (CSocD), Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, noted that the country has made tangible progress in reducing poverty, expanding social protection and promoting gender equality over the past five years.
According to the diplomat, Vietnam’s multidimensional poverty rate fell from 5.2% to 1.3%, while GDP per capita increased by 1.4 times, moving the country into the upper-middle-income group. Social policies continue to be strengthened, including a new Employment Law set to take effect in 2026, which will expand protection for informal workers and enhance labour market services.
On gender equality, women account for over 30% of National Assembly deputies and nearly half of the labour force, he said. In health care, health insurance coverage has reached 96% of the population, with a target of achieving universal coverage by 2030.
Vietnam has also waived tuition fees for public education nationwide, contributing to progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal on quality education.
Drawing on national experience, the Vietnamese representative called for stronger policy coordination through a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, the mainstreaming of gender equality in labour and social policies, and greater efforts to empower women economically. He also highlighted the importance of digital inclusion, particularly through investment in digital infrastructure and skills in rural, remote and disadvantaged areas, alongside enhanced international cooperation and support for developing countries.
The 64th session of the Commission for Social Development was held from February 2–10 at UN Headquarters in New York under the theme “Advancing Social Development and Social Justice through Coordinated, Equitable, and Inclusive Policies.” The meeting brought together ministers, senior officials responsible for labour and social affairs, and representatives of international organisations.
Opening the event, the President of the UN General Assembly underscored the close link between social justice, poverty eradication and inclusive development with global peace and stability, warning that climate change and widening inequalities could heighten the risk of instability in the absence of comprehensive policies.
Meanwhile, the President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) urged countries to increase investment in social protection and social services, describing them as the foundation for resilience and long-term growth.
During the general debate, many delegations emphasised people-centred policies, expanded social protection systems, decent work and targeted support for vulnerable groups, while developing countries highlighted the need for greater access to finance, technology and capacity-building.
