VOV.VN - Vietnam on February 2 called on the United States to immediately lift unilateral sanctions and embargo measures against Cuba, expressing deep concern over new US tariff policies that could harm the Cuban economy and people.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was seriously concerned by a US measure threatening to impose additional tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to Cuba, which it said would have a severe impact on Cuba’s socio-economic life.
“Vietnam calls on the United States to immediately lift unilateral blockade and sanctions against Cuba and take steps toward dialogue and improving relations with Cuba,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang told reporters on February 2.
She also reiterated Vietnam’s strong solidarity and traditional friendship with the Cuban people.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 29 that would apply tariffs on any country directly or indirectly shipping oil to Cuba. Cuba condemned the move, saying Washington has no authority to dictate its trade relationships.
Vietnam’s call aligns with longstanding international resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, in which a majority of member states have repeatedly urged the United States to end its embargo on Cuba.
Several other countries, including China, Russia, Venezuela and Mexico, have also criticised the US move and voiced support for Cuba, warning that the tariff measures undermine livelihoods and development prospects for the Cuban people.
Vietnamese leaders on December 2 sent messages of congratulations to Cuban leaders on the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (December 2, 1960–2025).
VOV.VN - Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang of Vietnam and Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment of Cuba Deborah Rivas Saavedra on December 1 co-chaired the first meeting of the Joint Committee for Implementation of the Vietnam–Cuba Trade Agreement, discussing measures to raise bilateral trade to US$500 million in the coming period.
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, while receiving the leadership of Prensa Latina in Hanoi on December 1, called on the Cuban news agency to continue being a reliable partner, collaborate closely, enhance journalistic capacity, and help promote the special relationship between Vietnam and Cuba.
