Vietnamese Prime Minister to attend 18th BRICS Summit in India

VOV.VN - A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Le Minh Hung will attend the 18th BRICS Summit and hold bilateral meetings in India on September 12-13 at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This marks the Prime Minister’s first participation in a BRICS summit. The visit comes as Vietnam is becoming increasingly engaged in BRICS cooperation mechanisms after officially becoming the 10th BRICS partner country in June 2025.

Participation in the 18th BRICS Summit will provide another channel for Vietnam to contribute to global issues while promoting cooperation with major economies and developing countries.

Vietnam has gradually participated in BRICS activities in recent years at the invitation of the group’s chairs. In 2024, then Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the BRICS Outreach/Plus Summit held in Kazan, Russia, as part of the 16th BRICS Summit. In June 2025, Vietnam officially became the 10th BRICS partner country joining the mechanism.

At the expanded BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi in 2026, Vietnam joined discussions on reform of the multilateral system and global governance. The meeting highlighted the need to strengthen multilateralism, reform international financial structures, reinforce a rules-based multilateral trading system and promote the role of Global South countries.

Notably, in the Joint Statement on the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and India issued in May 2026, Vietnam welcomed India’s assumption of the BRICS chairmanship in 2026, while India reaffirmed its support for Vietnam as a BRICS partner country. The two sides also agreed to strengthen coordination at multilateral forums and promote the voice of countries of the Global South in global governance.

BRICS was established in 2006, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India and China. The group has since expanded several times and now has 11 members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

Alongside its membership expansion, BRICS established a partner-country mechanism at the 2024 Kazan Summit. Vietnam officially joined the mechanism in June 2025. Partner countries are invited to attend summits and foreign ministers’ meetings and may participate in other BRICS activities on the basis of consensus.

BRICS cooperation is currently built around three main pillars: political and security affairs; economic and financial cooperation; and culture and people-to-people exchanges. The group also promotes cooperation in areas including trade and investment, emerging technologies, supply chains, healthcare, climate change and sustainable development.

In 2026, India holds the BRICS chairmanship under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The 18th BRICS Summit will take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12-13, bringing together leaders of member countries, partner countries and invited guests.
