VOV.VN - The National Assembly will elect key state leaders, including the State President, Prime Minister and National Assembly Chairman, during its first session of the 16th tenure scheduled to open in Hanoi next week.
At a press briefing on April 3, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Office Nguyen Van Hien said the personnel work would be a central focus of the session, with around two and a half days allocated for the legislature to decide on leadership positions.
The National Assembly is expected to elect the National Assembly Chairman, Vice Chairpersons and members of the Standing Committee, as well as heads of key bodies including the Ethnic Council, specialised committees, the State Auditor General and the Secretary General of the National Assembly.
It will also elect the State President, Prime Minister, Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court and Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.
In accordance with the 2013 Constitution, newly elected leaders will take the oath of office before the National Assembly immediately after their election.
Party General Secretary To Lam is expected to attend and deliver a keynote speech at the meeting.
The first session of the 16th National Assembly will convene a preparatory meeting on April 5, officially open on April 6 and is scheduled to close on April 23. The session will be held in person at the National Assembly House in Hanoi, with a total working time of about 11 days, divided into two phases.
Beyond personnel matters, lawmakers will review and adopt eight draft laws and one resolution, alongside deliberations on major socio-economic, financial and budgetary issues.
Key agenda items also include medium-term development strategies for 2026–2030, covering public investment, financial planning and public debt management.
The leadership votes come after Vietnam held nationwide elections in March for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term. The first session of the new legislature typically includes the election and approval of key state leadership positions.
