PM meets Vietnamese students, expatriates in Chongqing, China

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on November 8 met with Vietnamese students and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Chongqing as part of his working visit to the Chinese locality for major regional summits.

Chinh extended his warm greetings and best wishes to participants on behalf of the Vietnamese government and leaders. He also highlighted Vietnam’s remarkable progress over nearly 40 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renovation) process in 1986.

During the meeting, the PM shared the key achievements that have propelled Vietnam onto the global stage, from overcoming wars and sanctions to becoming a robust economy with growing international ties.

After nearly 40 years of reforms, the country’s GDP has grown significantly, from approximately US$4 billion in the 1980s to around US$430 billion in 2023, positioning Vietnam as the 34th largest economy in the world. GDP per capita has also risen significantly, from just US$100 to roughly US$4,300 last year.

In 2024, Vietnam’s macroeconomy remains stable, with inflation being kept under control and GDP growth reaching approximately 7%.

This economic transformation is a testament to the successful implementation of the economic renewal policies since 1986, he stressed.

In addition, Vietnam has so far established diplomatic relations with 194 countries and territories, and maintained strategic and comprehensive partnerships with 32 countries. The Communist Party of Vietnam has developed relations with 253 political parties in 115 countries worldwide. This broad network underscores Vietnam’s active role in global diplomacy and cooperation.

The PM emphasized the importance of national unity and the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam in the country’s success. He encouraged the Vietnamese students to maintain their aspirations and contribute to the country’s development, noting that their role was pivotal in helping Vietnam advance into a new era of growth.

He also highlighted the significance of the Vietnamese diaspora worldwide, stressing their contributions to strengthening ties between Vietnam and other countries, including through economic channels like remittances. Furthermore, he urged the Vietnamese community in Chongqing to stay united, support one another, and continue fostering strong relations with China.

During the meeting, the PM acknowledged participants’ aspirations and suggestions, and said he would direct relevant agencies to study and implement measures to address their legitimate concerns.

Earlier on November 7, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the eighth Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Summit, the 10th Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit, and the 11th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam (CLMV) summit in Kunming, China.
