VOV.VN - State President Vo Van Thuong, and 100 outstanding Vietnamese expatriates who have returned for the Homeland Spring programme, offered incense in commemoration of national ancestors, as well as late President Ho Chi Minh and late President Ton Duc Thang, in Ho Chi Minh City on February 2.
They later released live carps in a ritual that worship the Land Genie and Kitchen Gods on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month that falls on February 2 this year.
The ritual is a long-standing custom of great significance as it symbolizes the farewell to all bad things of the old year to help people enter a new year of peace and happiness.
On the day, Vietnamese people hold a ceremony to send off the Land Genie and Kitchen Gods to the Heaven. They believe that the Land Genie and Kitchen Gods are decisive to the good or bad luck and blessing for their families.
About 100 Vietnamese expatriates who represent more than 5 million Vietnamese nationals living abroad have returned to Ho Chi Minh City for the annual programme Homeland Spring getting underway on February 1-2.
Some 1,300 overseas Vietnamese in Germany gathered at an event to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival held by the Vietnamese Embassy on January 28.
