VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and State President To Lam has emphasised that kindness should not only be viewed as an individual virtue but also promoted as a social norm that helps strengthen public trust, social discipline and sustainable national development.
Speaking at a meeting in Hanoi on June 10 with 100 outstanding individuals recognised by the television programme Việc tử tế (Good Deeds), he praised ordinary citizens whose compassionate actions have made positive contributions to society.
The honoured individuals included people who rescued those in danger, supported disadvantaged communities and quietly carried out acts of kindness and courage in everyday life.
According to him, seemingly small actions such as helping others in difficult situations, protecting vulnerable people or acting courageously in emergencies can generate a powerful ripple effect and contribute to a more caring society.
The Vietnamese leader noted that alongside economic growth, scientific advancement, institutional reform and international integration, cultural values, ethics and human development remain fundamental pillars of national progress.
He described kindness as a form of “social capital” that helps build trust, social stability and long-term development.
A society lacking trust will pay a high price for development, he said, stressing that protecting what is right, encouraging positive values and ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind are essential to strengthening social cohesion.
He therefore called for the continued promotion of core values among Vietnamese citizens, including patriotism, integrity, responsibility, discipline, creativity, resilience and aspiration.
These values, he stated, should be nurtured through families, schools and communities to create a social environment where good deeds are encouraged and individuals who do the right thing are supported rather than isolated.
At the same time, he stressed that kindness should not be confused with leniency.
Kindness must go hand in hand with principles, discipline and responsibility. It means being compassionate while firmly protecting justice, fairness and the rule of law, he said.
The top Party and State leader also highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour in the digital age. He called on citizens to respect facts, refrain from spreading misinformation, avoid online abuse and contribute to a healthier digital environment through constructive dialogue and positive engagement.
In his view, kindness in today’s interconnected world also means competing fairly, conducting business with integrity, complying with the law and safeguarding national reputation.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam commended Vietnam Television's Good Deeds programme for consistently highlighting inspiring stories and positive examples across society.
He emphasised that the media plays an important role in promoting positive values, strengthening public confidence and encouraging social responsibility.
The leader expressed hope that such initiatives would continue to inspire people to contribute to a more compassionate, civilised and sustainable society.
He concluded by saying that lasting national development depends not only on economic achievements but also on public trust, ethical values and the widespread practice of kindness in everyday life.
