VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on April 29 led a high-ranking delegation to offer incense and flowers in tribute to General Vo Nguyen Giap and fallen soldiers in Quang Tri province, marking the 51st anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30).
At the memorial site in Vung Chua – Dao Yen, the delegation observed a minute of silence and expressed profound gratitude to General Vo Nguyen Giap (1911-2013), a distinguished disciple of President Ho Chi Minh and a brilliant military strategist who made outstanding contributions to Vietnam’s revolutionary cause.
For more than three decades as Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of the Central Military Commission, General Giap’s name was closely associated with the nation’s historic victories in the wars of resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism, as well as the cause of national construction and defence.
The delegation later paid tribute at the Gianh Ferry historical site, a national relic that played a vital role during the war. Located along the Gianh River, the site served as a crucial logistical hub linking the northern rear with the southern battlefield and as a starting point for the legendary “no-number” ships along the Ho Chi Minh Sea Route.
Due to its strategic importance, the area became a major target of heavy bombardment. Between 1964 and 1973, it endured more than 2,000 air raids, with 114 soldiers and militia members sacrificing their lives.
At the special national relic site of Hien Luong – Ben Hai, a symbol of the country’s division and eventual reunification, Party General Secretary and President To Lam attended a flag-raising ceremony marking national reunification.
Earlier the same day, the top leader also offered incense and flowers at the Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery, the final resting place of more than 10,200 soldiers who laid down their lives along the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the resistance war.
At the cemetery, he expressed deep respect and gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for national independence, freedom and reunification.

Politburo member, Permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu on April 28 led a high-ranking delegation to offer incense at Temple of Dien Bien Phu Martyrs in Dien Bien province in tribute to fallen heroes, and those who bravely fought, sacrificed their lives at Dien Bien Phu battlefield.
