PM hosts official welcome ceremony for Timor-Leste counterpart in Hanoi

The visit, taking place from June 7-10 at the invitation of Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, is expected to contribute to Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN following its accession to the bloc, as well as to the future development of the ASEAN Community.

At the Government Headquarters, PM Le Minh Hung warmly welcomed Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão and his high-level Timor-Leste delegation.

Young people and children from Hanoi waved the flags of the two countries to greet the visiting leader and his delegation, while representatives of the capital’s children presented him with flowers.

Following the playing of the national anthems of the two countries,  both PMs reviewed the guard of honour of the Vietnam People's Army and introduced members of their respective high-level delegations.

Vietnam and Timor-Leste enjoy a longstanding friendship. Vietnam was among the first countries to recognise the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) in September 1975.

Vietnam’s decision to establish an embassy in Dili in mid-2025, which officially began operations in April 2026, is regarded as an important milestone that helps deepen bilateral friendship and cooperation in a more substantive and effective manner, benefiting the peoples of both countries as well as ASEAN solidarity and development.

Both nations’ leaders have maintained regular high-level contacts. Vietnam stands ready to continue sharing its development and international integration experience and to coordinate closely with Timor-Leste within the ASEAN family. The two countries also cooperate effectively at multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations.

Economic and trade ties have continued to grow, while investment cooperation has emerged as a bright spot in bilateral relations through the successful operations of Viettel Timor (Telemor), an investment project of Vietnam's Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) providing telecommunications services in Timor-Leste. Both countries also have potential for cooperation in agriculture, education and oil and gas.

The visit is expected to help consolidate political trust and boost more substantive and effective cooperation across various fields, while enabling Timor-Leste to draw on Vietnam’s experience and support for its effective participation in ASEAN and regional cooperation mechanisms.

Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão’s participation in the ASEAN Future Forum 2026 also provides an opportunity for Timor-Leste to reaffirm its commitment to ASEAN’s shared goals and enhance connections with regional partners in support of socio-economic development.

Following the welcome ceremony,  both PMs led talks to review bilateral cooperation and discuss directions for future cooperation. They also witnessed the signing of cooperation documents between Vietnam and Timor-Leste and viewed a photo display on bilateral friendship jointly organised by the Government Office and the Vietnam News Agency.
