Prospects of co-operation with Cambodia highlighted

VOV.VN - Cambodia’s victory over the genocidal Pol Pot regime on January 7, 1979, demonstrates the solidarity between Vietnamese and Cambodian peoples and armies, thereby opening up a new page in the bilateral friendship and neighbourliness, according to an article published on the website of the Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC).

The article was issued on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the victory and hailed the role of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in the event, achievements the neighbour has recorded in development and peacekeeping, as well as co-operation between the two countries.

The piece’s author Uch Leang, a researcher at RAC, said that following the victory Vietnamese soldiers continued helping the Cambodian army in personnel training and enhancing its combat capacity to avert the potential return of the genocidal regime.

All of the Vietnamese soldiers returned home in September, 1989. Since then, the bilateral relationship has been constantly developing across various spheres, thereby benefiting people of both nations.

These ties show not only the neighbourliness, but also the fraternity of both sides as the two countries have stood together in their past struggles for national liberation and reunification, as well as the present cause of national construction and development, the expert said.

The article also reviewed the official visit to Vietnam made by Prime Minister Hun Manet on December 11 and December 12, 2023, which contributed to reinforcing and deepening the friendship and collaboration in all areas on the basis of good neighbourliness, solidarity, and mutual understanding.

Regarding bilateral trade, Leang said it grew more than 20% annually during the 2015 to 2020 period, hitting US$10.57 billion in 2022, up nearly 11% on-year. It is expected to stand at US$20 billion in the time ahead.

The article quoted a report by the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment as saying that Vietnam had, as of 2023, run 206 projects in the neighbouring country with a total registered capital of US$2.94 billion, ranking fifth among the countries and territories investing in the Cambodian market.

The researcher stated that economic, trade, and investment ties will create momentum for the good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive linkages, and long-term sustainability to move forward in the time ahead.
