Vietnam attaches great importance to developing relations with Russia and Australia

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held bilateral meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk during the ASEAN 47 Summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to promote comprehensive cooperation with these strategic partners.

At the meeting with the Australian PM, both sides appreciated the effective progress in bilateral relations and agreed to intensify high-level exchanges and boost closer coordination in ASEAN-led regional mechanisms.

PM Chinh proposed the effective implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership action plan, aiming to boost bilateral trade toward US$20 billion, expand defence-security cooperation, digital transformation, science and technology collaboration, and human resource development.

He also hailed Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy 2040 and requested continued ODA support in priority areas such as climate change, energy, and circular economy.

In response, PM Anthony Albanese affirmed that Australia prioritizes its relationship with Vietnam, regards Vietnam as a key partner in Southeast Asia. He also emphasized that upgrading the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership opens a new chapter, and pledged ongoing ODA support in areas where Vietnam has needs, including climate adaptation, energy transition, digital transformation, and circular economy.

Meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Overchuk, on behalf of Vietnam’s Party and State leaders, PM Chinh thanked Russia for its longstanding support, affirmed that Vietnam prioritizes substantial development of the Vietnam-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and welcomed Russia’s participation at the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime hosted by Vietnam (October 25-26). He also asked Russia to expand scholarships for Vietnamese students, especially in science, technology, and civilian nuclear energy.

Both sides consented to promote balanced trade, facilitate market access, enhance infrastructure and transport connectivity, including railway cooperation. Regarding the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power project, they agreed to accelerate negotiations to commence construction soon.

The Government chief also suggested Russia expand the market for Vietnamese exports, remove trade defence measures under the Eurasian Economic Union framework, and create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in Russia to stabilize their lives and contribute to bilateral relations.

Deputy PM Overchuk conveyed Russia’s leaders’ greetings to Party General Secretary To Lam, appreciated Vietnam’s participation in the 80th-anniversary celebration of the victory over fascism in Moscow, and congratulated Vietnam on major events in 2025, including the 50th anniversary of the Southern liberation and reunification of the country and the 80th National Day.

Both sides concurred to continue intensifying people-to-people exchanges, tourism, and mutual understanding to forge the traditional friendship between the two countries.
