Vietnam Coast Guard ship 8001 visits RoK for exchanges

The delegation was led by Colonel Nguyen Tran Dong, Deputy Commander of Coast Guard Region 3 Command, and arrived at Yeosu Port in South Jeolla province.

Thi was the second visit by a Vietnam Coast Guard vessel to the country for exchanges and working sessions with the Korea Coast Guard. The first mission was carried out by Coast Guard ship 8004 from Coast Guard Region 1 Command in November 2024.

A welcome ceremony was held on June 15 with the participation of Kim Tae Kyun, Director of the Korea Coast Guard Academy, along with officers and personnel of the Korea Coast Guard. Major General Luong Dinh Hung, Deputy Commander of the Vietnam Coast Guard Command, and Colonel Le Hiep Lam, Vietnam’s Defence Attaché to the RoK, were also present to receive the delegation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kim Tae Kyun welcomed the crew of ship 8001 and the Vietnam Coast Guard delegation to the Korea Coast Guard Training Centre, highlighting the visit as significant as it marked the second exchange between the two countries’ maritime law enforcement forces since 2024.

He said the visit provided an important opportunity to strengthen friendship, build trust and advance cooperation between the Vietnam Coast Guard and the Korea Coast Guard. He also expressed hope that both sides will continue expanding exchanges, sharing expertise and enhancing connectivity to further deepen cooperation between the two forces.

At the ceremony, Major General Luong Dinh Hung said it was an honour for ship 8001 and the delegation to visit and work with the Korea Coast Guard in Yeosu, while thanking the host side for its warm and respectful reception.

He noted that the Vietnam Coast Guard and the Korea Coast Guard had maintained effective cooperation across multiple areas in recent years, contributing to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the RoK and helping ensure maritime security and safety in the region.

According to Hung, the visit by ship 8001 was not only part of regular bilateral external engagement but also an important milestone that builds on the success of the 14th bilateral conference between the Korea Coast Guard and the Vietnam Coast Guard.

It also underscored the growing trust, mutual understanding and increasingly close ties between the maritime law enforcement forces of the two countries.

As maritime security and safety continue to face shared challenges, including piracy, smuggling, transnational crime, marine pollution and natural disasters, Hung said activities under the visit will  further improve coordination between the two sides.

He reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening substantive cooperation, enhancing law enforcement capacity and improving coordination in addressing emerging maritime issues for the benefit of both countries and for a peaceful, stable and sustainably developed maritime region.

During their stay in the RoK, officers and crew members of ship 8001 took part in a range of professional exchange activities, including experience-sharing in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, fire prevention and control, maritime safety and security, and responses to non-traditional maritime security challenges.

The trip also provided an opportunity for both sides to enhance mutual understanding, strengthen solidarity and reinforce friendship and trust, contributing to the continued substantive and effective development of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the RoK.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured the Korea Coast Guard Academy and paid a courtesy call there, conducted joint search and rescue drills at sea, and joined sports and cultural exchanges with Korea Coast Guard personnel to further strengthen mutual understanding, solidarity and friendship between both nations’ maritime law enforcement forces.

In recent years, cooperation between the coast guard forces and maritime law enforcement agencies of Vietnam and the RoK has continued to expand through delegation exchanges, training programmes, experience-sharing and joint efforts to enhance maritime law enforcement capacity.

The latest visit by ship 8001 reaffirmed the proactive role of the Vietnam Coast Guard in advancing international cooperation and strengthening maritime law enforcement capacity, contributing to peace and stability at sea while helping implement bilateral cooperation in maritime security and further deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the RoK.
