Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia bolster security cooperation to combat transnational crime

VOV.VN - A second ministerial conference on security cooperation between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos was held in Phnom Penh on June 30, focusing on cooperation in safeguarding security and maintaining social order.

Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Luong Tam Quang co-chaired the meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha and Lao Minister of Public Security Vanthong Kongmany.

Building on the foundation laid at the first conference in the central city of Da Nang, the latest meeting marked a further step in security cooperation among the three Indochinese countries as they work to deal with  current security challenges.

Addressing the conference, Luong Tam Quang said police forces from the three countries had maintained close coordination and achieved encouraging results in recent years.

“Operational units under the three ministries, together with police forces in localities across the three countries, have proactively coordinated efforts to combat various types of crime, particularly online fraud, human trafficking and high-tech crime.

This cooperation has gradually helped establish effective mechanisms and forms of cooperation for the years ahead.”

Quang called on the ministries responsible for public security and internal affairs of the three nations  to effectively implement conclusions and agreements reached by senior leaders, with the aim of delivering substantive progress in security cooperation.

He said stronger cooperation will help build stable and peaceful borders, support sustainable development and meet development goals in the new phase.

At the conference, representatives from the three ministries delivered presentations on combating cross-border human trafficking, implementing anti-drug prevention and control programmes, and strengthening cooperation to tackle online fraud in the new situation.

At the end of the conference, the three ministers adopted a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to deepening political trust and mutual confidence.

They also pledged to step up joint efforts to prevent and combat transnational crime, expand information sharing and coordinated investigations, bolster  cooperation and border liaison mechanisms to maintain peaceful, secure and stable border areas conducive to development, and increase dialogue, exchanges and people-to-people activities to further promote friendship and mutual support.

During his visit to Cambodia, Luong Tam Quang also paid courtesy calls on Hun Sen, President of the Senate and President of the Cambodian People's Party, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

He also held bilateral meetings with Cambodian Interior Minister Sar Sokha and Lao Minister of Public Security Vanthong Kongmany.
