VOV.VN - Politburo Member and Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung called for stronger regional economic integration and resilience to external shocks at the ASEAN+3 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila on July 23.
Attending the event on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-59) alongside counterparts from ASEAN member states, China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, Minister Trung emphasized ASEAN+3's strategic role in securing a peaceful and prosperous future for the region.
To help ASEAN+3 adapt effectively to evolving strategic environments, Minister Trung urged member nations to prioritize deepening economic integration and regional connectivity through the effective implementation of trade agreements. He proposed expanding cooperation in energy and food security, including studying the possibility of a joint energy cooperation agreement to bolster regional readiness against external shocks.
The Vietnamese diplomat also called on China, Japan, and the RoK to step up support for ASEAN in technology, innovation, and digital transformation, while effectively implementing leaders' agreements on electric vehicle development, clean energy, and low-carbon growth.
Building on Vietnam's sound bilateral ties with Northeast Asian partners, Minister Trung reaffirmed that the country will continue doing its utmost to contribute to the further development of ASEAN+3, promoting regional peace, stability, and development while delivering practical benefits to the people.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the nearly three-decade journey of ASEAN+3, affirming its position as one of the most practical and effective cooperation mechanisms in the region. Through partnership in trade, investment, finance, supply chain stability, and food and energy security, ASEAN+3 nations have jointly overcome financial crises, pandemics, natural disasters, and geopolitical uncertainties.
Foreign ministers from China, Japan, and the RoK reaffirmed their commitment to supporting ASEAN centrality, helping implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, and enhancing regional resilience against external disruptions.
The ministers agreed that ASEAN+3 must continue acting as a primary driver of East Asian cooperation, prioritizing economic linkage, collective capacity, and crisis response. They stressed the need to accelerate the ASEAN+3 Work Plan 2023-2027, deepen economic ties, link regional free trade agreements, and optimize financial support mechanisms.
The meeting also concurred to explore expanding the ASEAN+3 Emergency Rice Reserve, examine the feasibility of a joint petroleum reserve alongside green transition cooperation, and step up digital transformation, technology, and innovation by raising Northeast Asia's leading position in these fields. Investments in human resources through education, cultural exchange, and tourism will also remain a priority.
Authorised by Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung, the Vietnamese delegation on July 22 attended meetings between ASEAN foreign ministers and their counterparts from Canada, the Republic of Korea (RoK), and Australia as part of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-59) and Related Meetings in Manila.
