200-kilo wartime bomb unearthed in central Vietnam

VOV.VN - A wartime bomb weighing approximately 200kg has been uncovered by a construction worker while operating an excavator to clear a drainage pipeline in Ky Anh town of Ha Tinh province, central Vietnam.

The bomb, measuring over 1.5 metres in length with a diametre of over 27 centimetres, was found on March​ 3.

Hearing about the information, local authorities ​and military engineers from the Military Command of Ky Anh town moved to cordon off the site for disposal. The bomb was then relocated and safely detonated in accordance with safety regulations.

Authorities later confirmed that the object was an unexploded bomb that had been left over from wartime.

Vietnam is among the countries most affected by unexploded ordnance (UXO).

Today, unexploded bombs and mines are hidden underground in many provinces and cities nationwide, with around 5.6 million hectares of land contaminated, equivalent to 17.71% of the country’s natural land area.
