VOV.VN - Flash floods triggered by heavy rain struck Muong Than Commune in Lai Chau province, northwestern Vietnam, on the morning of July 17, leaving three people missing, one injured and hundreds of homes damaged or swept away.
Initial reports said dozens of households in Chit Village remained isolated by floodwaters. Landslides, mud and debris from the Hoang Lien mountain range also cut off a section of National Highway 32 through Muong Than Commune, making access to affected areas and rescue operations more difficult.
About 200 military, police and other emergency personnel from Lai Chau province reached the affected area to search for the missing and help residents move their property to safer locations. Local authorities in Muong Than, with support from neighboring Pac Ta commune, also reached one of the landslide sites to assist rescue operations.
Recovery and relief efforts became more difficult as heavy rain continued.
VOV.VN - Northern Vietnam is entering the peak of a widespread heavy rainfall spell, with the heaviest downpours forecast for June 16-17, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides, and localised urban flooding.
