Austrian tourist rescued after getting lost overnight in Vietnam forest

The patient, identified as Abude Anthony Palo, a Filipino national born in 1980, was working aboard the cargo vessel ESL DACHAN BAY en route from Taiwan (China) to Singapore.
At 20:40 on April 8, the rescue centre received an emergency report from the vessel and its operator, stating that the crew member had developed severe abdominal pain accompanied by vomiting and sweating. The ship subsequently altered its course toward waters off Ho Chi Minh City and requested urgent medical evacuation.
Following the alert, the centre provided remote medical consultation, during which the patient was suspected of acute appendicitis, a condition that could become life-threatening without timely treatment.
Rescue forces maintained continuous communication with the vessel, closely monitoring the patient’s condition while coordinating with relevant agencies to prepare an evacuation plan.
Early on April 9, rescue vessel SAR 272, stationed in Ho Chi Minh City, was dispatched with a medical team from Vung Tau Hospital. After approximately two hours at sea, SAR 272 reached the cargo ship, transferred the patient onboard, and administered initial medical care before returning to shore.
By 10:00 the same day, the patient was safely brought ashore and handed over to border guard forces and the ship’s representative for further treatment at a specialised medical facility.
