New cold spell hits northern Vietnam, brings rain to regional localities

The cold air front is moving towards Northern Vietnam and is anticipated to hit border localities on December 6 morning before spreading across the region later on the day, said the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Strong winds accompanies rain will cause temperatures to fall to 15-18 degrees Celsius in the plains and 13-15 degrees Celsius in the highlands.

Several mountainous areas such as Sa Pa town in Lao Cai province are set to see temperatures to drop to below 11 degrees Celsius.

The new cold air wave will send temperatures in the capital of Hanoi tumbling to a low of 17 degrees Celsius on December 6 before rising a bit on the following days.

The cold front will also affect north-central and central localities, prompting temperatures to go down to 16-19 degrees Celsius.

Notably, the cold spell will also bring rain to central localities, with Ha Tinh and Thua Thien-Hue to receive between 20-70mm of rain on December 6. Rain is expected to subside on December and the following days.

Weather experts say in December, cold air will increase in frequency, but tend to be weaker than the average of previous years due to the impact of the La Nina phenomenon.
