Noi Bai airport tightens health surveillance to keep out Chikungunya disease

VOV.VN - The Hanoi People’s Committee has directed the Department of Health and relevant agencies to tighten health surveillance, especially at Noi Bai International Airport, to prevent the potential entry of Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne infectious disease.

In a recently dispatched dispatch, the Department of Health was required to closely monitor the disease at the airport, healthcare facilities, and within the community, to promptly detect suspected cases, especially those arriving from affected regions, and ensure timely isolation and testing.

The local health sector was asked to carry out vector surveillance targeting Aedes mosquitoes in and around the airport to avoid secondary outbreaks. Passenger health communication, disease prevention guidance, and coordination in handling suspected cases were ordered to be reinforced.

Although Vietnam has not recorded any Chikungunya cases, the risk of the disease entering the country remains high amid increasing international travel.

Also in its dispatch, the municipal administration asked the Department of health to provide guidance on Chikungunya prevention in combination with dengue fever prevention; direct medical facilities to prepare sufficient human resources in order to avoid overloading the system; and organise inspections, supervision, and reporting of the epidemic situation to the Ministry of Health.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, the same vector responsible for spreading dengue fever. The virus does not spread directly from person to person. Mosquitoes are most active during the day, with peak biting times in the early morning and late afternoon.

There is no specific antiviral treatment; care focuses on relieving symptoms. However, recovery typically provides lasting immunity.
