VOV.VN - A tropical depression has formed in the northeastern part of the East Sea, becoming the first tropical system of 2026 in the region and signaling the start of this year’s storm season, according to Vietnamese weather experts.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said late on June 3 that a low-pressure system over the northeastern waters of the East Sea had strengthened into a tropical depression.
At 10 p.m. (local time), the system’s centre was located about 270 kilometers east of the Paracel Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 39-49 kph and gusts reaching 62 kph.
Forecasters said the tropical depression is expected to move northeastward at a relatively fast speed over the next 24-36 hours and is likely to exit the East Sea. Meteorological agencies said the system currently poses little direct threat to Vietnam’s mainland.
Vietnamese meteorological authorities advised vessels operating in the northern East Sea to closely monitor updates on the tropical depression and prepare safety measures in case of worsening weather conditions.
Although the tropical depression is not considered dangerous at this stage, weather experts said its formation marks the official beginning of the 2026 rainy and typhoon season in the East Sea.
Seasonal climate forecasts indicate that June is typically the period when early-season tropical cyclones begin forming in the region, with activity levels expected to remain close to the long-term average.
From June through the end of the year, the East Sea could see between 12 and 14 storms and tropical depressions, some of which may affect Vietnam, according to forecasters.
Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and landslides are also expected to become more frequent in the coming months, especially in mountainous and coastal areas.
Experts warned that storms and tropical depressions have become increasingly unpredictable in recent years due to climate change. Several recent storms formed later in the season but intensified rapidly, followed unusual tracks and triggered widespread heavy rainfall.
Localities are advised to review disaster preparedness plans early, particularly in coastal areas, low-lying regions and locations vulnerable to flashfloods and landslides.
While the first tropical depression of 2026 may not cause significant impacts, experts said it serves as an early reminder that the storm season has begun and that proactive disaster response measures will be essential in the months ahead.
VOV.VN - El Niño is expected to develop between June and August 2026 with a probability exceeding 90%, bringing an increased risk of extreme heat, drought and severe weather across Vietnam through the end of the year, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s weather agency has warned of a high likelihood that El Nino will return from mid-2026 and could grow significantly stronger toward the end of the year, bringing intensified heatwaves and more extreme weather.
VOV.VN - Recent warnings from global meteorological agencies about a possible “super El Nino” in 2026, though still preliminary, underscore the need for Vietnam to prepare for a range of potential climate risks if the phenomenon intensifies.
