Knapper, who was making a field trip to war-torn Quang Tri, emphasized the US commitment to supporting Vietnam in dealing with the aftermath of war, particularly the issue of unexploded bombs left over from the conflict. He praised the efforts of the Quang Tri administration and people in clearing UXOs and affirmed that the cooperation between the two countries in this area has achieved significant positive results.

At the meeting, Hoang Nam, vice chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, expressed his deep gratitude to the US government for its support in helping Vietnam address the consequences of war, particularly the mine clearance programmes in Quang Tri.

He requested that Knapper pay attention to efforts to search for information about missing US and Vietnamese soldiers from the war in Vietnam. He also called on the US to continue funding mine clearance projects through non-governmental organizations, aiming to make Quang Tri the first area to be declared mine-free by 2035.

Quang Tri is the province having the highest landmine contamination rate in the country, with 82% of its total land area affected. Over the years, the US has funded many projects aimed at clearing UXOs, assisting victims, and raising public awareness about safety. This support has not only reduced risks but also created conditions for socio-economic development in the region.
