Vietnam ranks among Top 10 at 2025 International Biology Olympiad

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national team has achieved remarkable success at the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2025), held in the Philippines from July 19 to 27, with all four participating students winning medals.

The team secured one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, placing Vietnam among the top 10 countries with the highest total scores, according to Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MOET).

The gold medal was awarded to Nguyen Luong Thai Duy, an 11th-grade student from Hanoi–Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. Duy ranked 7th out of 298 contestants, an impressive result for such a rigorous competition.

Two silver medals went to Nguyen Huu Thanh, a 12th-grade student from Tran Phu High School for the Gifted in Hai Phong city, and Bui Hoang Dai Duong, a 12th-grade student from Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted in Hue city.

Le Hoang Kieu Anh, a 12th-grade student from Hanoi–Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, won the bronze medal.

The MOET noted that this year’s outstanding performance underscores the high quality of Vietnam's general education and affirms the country's effective policies for identifying and nurturing gifted students in alignment with international standards.

The IBO 2025 brought together 81 teams representing countries and territories across the globe, with 298 high school students participating in this competition.

Contestants faced a highly demanding schedule, including two theory exams, each lasting 180 minutes, and four experimental laboratory tests, each lasting 90 minutes.

Due to the complex nature of the practical tasks, including preparation of materials and equipment, the hands-on sessions extended over 12 hours, running continuously from 12:30 p.m. on July 22 to 12:30 a.m. on July 23.

The International Biology Olympiad is recognised as one of the most comprehensive and prestigious international science competitions at the high school level, requiring not only advanced knowledge in biology, but also interdisciplinary skills in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and environmental science. Participants are also expected to demonstrate a wide range of laboratory skills—from the molecular to the ecological scale.
