Vietnam among top four at 2025 International AI Olympiad
The Vietnamese national team excelled in both individual and team events at the 2025 International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) held recently in Beijing, China.
VOV.VN - Vietnam has launched the Vietnam Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (VAIO) 2027 to select its national team for the International AI Olympiad (IAIO) 2027, which will be held in the country for the first time.
The IAIO is an international academic competition that introduces secondary school students to emerging developments in artificial intelligence. It was initiated by Professor John Shawe-Taylor, President of the IAIO and Director of the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI).
Vietnam won two silver medals and one bronze medal at IAIO 2026 in Slovenia, helping pave the way for the Institute of Research and Innovation in Quality Assurance (RIVA) to bring the competition to the nation in 2027.
The 2027 edition will mark both the first time Vietnam has hosted the IAIO and the first time the competition has been held in Southeast Asia. The event is scheduled to take place in the central city of Da Nang from February 25 to March 2, 2027, and is expected to attract around 300 delegates from more than 40 countries and territories.
VAIO 2027 is open to lower and upper secondary school students nationwide with a view to identifying and nurturing talented students in mathematics, computer science, programming and artificial intelligence.
The national preliminary round is scheduled for October 18, followed by the national final in Hanoi on January 10, 2027, to select Vietnam's team for the IAIO.
At the launch ceremony on July 17, Nguyen Quyet Chien, Secretary General of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), said the competition is designed to foster computational thinking, self-directed learning and teamwork while helping students develop career aspirations in artificial intelligence and other advanced technology fields.
The hosting of IAIO 2027 comes as Vietnam steps up implementation of Politburo Resolution No. 57 on breakthroughs in science and technology, innovation and national digital transformation.
The competition aims to inspire a passion for science, foster innovative thinking, and nurture a sense of responsibility and aspiration to contribute to the country's future development among young people, with medals being only one measure of success, Chien added.
Vietnam has added another achievement to its growing record in artificial intelligence competitions, with a Da Nang student taking gold at the inaugural Asia-Pacific AI Olympiad.
