Vietnam’s tech haven opens doors to Sri Lankan talent with first full funding

The Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka, together with the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT), convened a ceremony on October 21 to unveil and confer the first-ever full scholarships for Sri Lankan students bound for PTIT’s Hanoi campus.

The scholarship programme funds one year of Vietnamese language studies, plus a five-year engineering curriculum. Coverage includes full tuition, housing, living expenses, insurance, and round-trip airfare. The selected majors must meet PTIT’s academic strengths and Sri Lanka’s development needs, including information technology, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, electronics and telecommunications engineering, computer engineering, and Internet of Things (IoT).

In her speech, Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam hailed PTIT as one of Vietnam’s leading establishments in information and communications technology (ICT) training.

Vietnam will continue expanding educational and training ties with Sri Lanka, she said, describing the endeavour as a fertile ground for future collaboration.

Recipients hail from localities such as Kandy, Matara and Ambakote. Most are offspring of Sri Lankan political party members, including the Communist Party of Sri Lanka and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Distinguished by their academic prowess, they also expressed a keen desire to experience Vietnam’s advanced education system.

PTIT has crafted a custom and international-standard academic roadmap for Sri Lankan enrollees, blending theory, hands-on work and digital skills to equip them for international tech jobs.

The initiative stands as a vivid symbol of Vietnam-Sri Lanka friendship, underscoring education as a lasting diplomatic bridge. It fosters mutual understanding, bolsters interpersonal bonds and unlocks paths for strategic joint efforts aimed at sustainable growth and a bright future for the youth of both nations.
