VOV launches donation drive to support storm-hit residents

VOV.VN - Responding to the appeal of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) launched a fundraising campaign at its Hanoi headquarters on October 4 to support residents heavily affected by Typhoon Bualoi, the 10th storm to hit the East Sea this year.

In his address, VOV President Do Tien Sy said that in recent days, many localities, particularly those in the central region and northern mountainous areas, have endured prolonged downpours and flooding that caused severe loss of life and property.

He noted that VOV’s media outlets have been fully mobilized to provide comprehensive coverage of storm prevention and control efforts, promptly disseminating the Government’s directives on disaster response, offering up-to-date information on weather developments, and highlighting the determination of local authorities and frontline forces. The national broadcaster has also reflected diverse efforts to help affected communities recover and stabilize their lives.

In light of these hardships, and in the spirit of mutual assistance-“the intact leaf covers the torn one”-the Party Committee and leadership of VOV organized the donation drive to aid those struggling with disaster recovery. President Do Tien Sy emphasized that after the October 4 campaign, VOV staff will continue engaging in various activities to support people in storm- and flood-hit areas.

Given the complex developments of Typhoon Matmo (Storm No. 11), which is forecast to make landfall in Vietnam soon, the top VOV leader urged all units to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates on forecasts, warnings, and the Government’s guidance to help the public prepare effectively.

“Our units must continue prompt, wide-ranging, and in-depth coverage of Typhoon Matmo, as we did with previous storms . We have successfully reflected the tremendous efforts of key forces such as the police, military, youth volunteers, and civil defence units in storm prevention and relief work,” Do Tien Sy said.

In addition, VOV Deputy General Director Pham Manh Hung stated that in September alone, four tropical storms affected various parts of the country, with Typhoon Bualoi causing particularly devastating damage across the northern and north-central regions.

“As a national media agency, all VOV units have provided extensive and continuous coverage of Typhoon Bualoi from prevention to post-storm recovery. The storm’s circulation has led to serious consequences, with the number of casualties likely to rise as full assessments are still underway. In the coming days, we must brace for Typhoon Matmo, which is expected to bring heavy rain to the northern provinces. Given the already saturated soil in the northern mountains, the risk of landslides is extremely high. All units must stay focused on keeping the public informed,” Hung said.

According to preliminary data as of 8 p.m. on October 2, Typhoon Bualoi left 65 people dead or missing and 164 injured. It destroyed 349 houses, damaged more than 172,000 others, and inundated over 100,000 hectares of rice fields, crops, and aquaculture farms. The total economic loss is estimated at about US$15.86 trillion.
