Sports Minister urges SEA Games athletes to compete with pride

VOV.VN - Vietnamese athletes heading to SEA Games 33 in Thailand must combine competitive ambition with fair play and national pride, underscoring their role as ambassadors of Vietnamese sport and culture, Sports Minister Nguyen Van Hung said on December 9.

Meeting with officials, coaches and athletes of Vietnam in Thailand for the regional sporting event, Hung conveyed the Prime Minister’s encouragement and urged athletes to aim not only for medals but also for exemplary conduct and dedication in representing the national flag.

“Every athlete and team official is not only a competitor but also a cultural ambassador. This is a chance to showcase the resilience, hospitality, and spirit of the Vietnamese people to the world,” said the minister, emphasising that the team should compete with both skill and integrity.

Team leader Nguyen Hong Minh said the delegation is focusing on high-performance events as a stepping stone toward broader competitions, including the Asian Games and the Olympics. He highlighted that the support of Party and State leaders, media, and Vietnamese communities at home and abroad is a key motivator, helping athletes adapt quickly to life and logistics in the host country.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Pham Viet Hung affirmed the embassy’s full support, to ensure the team has optimal conditions for training and competition.

Vietnam is sending 1,165 members to SEA Games 33, including 842 athletes, 189 coaches and 19 experts. The team will compete in 47 of 66 sports, across 443 of 573 medal events.

SEA Games 33 is scheduled to open in Thailand on December 9 and will last till December 20.
