VOV.VN - Vietnam got off to a good start at the 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship by defeating Cambodia 6-0 in their opening Group A match at Lach Tray Stadium on the evening of August 6.
Facing the world’s 118th-ranked team, Vietnam easily demonstrated their superior class. The home side dominated from the first whistle, controlling the game almost entirely in Cambodia’s half.
Within the first 20 minutes, Vietnam scored four quick goals. Duong Thi Van, Ngan Thi Van Su, Pham Hai Yen, and Nguyen Thi Van each found the net in succession, overwhelming Cambodia’s defence and leaving them with no time to react.
With a comfortable lead and control of the game, coach Mai Duc Chung’s players took the opportunity to slow the tempo and practice structured passing and movement patterns.
As the first half came to a close and early into the second, Vietnam increased the pressure once again, exposing Cambodia’s disorganised backline. After missing a few chances, the home side added two more goals, both involving impact substitutes.
Nguyen Thi Truc Huong made it 5-0 with a calm touch and finish inside the box. Just minutes later, striker Huynh Nhu delivered a pinpoint cross for Thai Thi Thao to head home, sealing the 6-0 scoreline.
Vietnam continued to dominate possession throughout the remainder of the match, with Cambodia unable to string together any meaningful attacks or even progress past the halfway line. Despite several chances, no further goals were added.
With this emphatic 6-0 win, Vietnam temporarily sit second in Group A after the first round of matches, tied with Thailand on three points but behind on goal difference. IN another group A match on the same day, Thailand defeated Indonesia 7-0 to top the group.
Vietnam are scheduled to play Indonesia on August 8. Given their current form, the Vietnamese players are expected to aim for another high-scoring victory to maintain their advantage in the race for a semifinal spot.
